Flotation Therapy: Super Bowl Secret Sauce?
There are inevitably many tools which help keep all-star athletes performing at their peak—especially when it comes to preparing for the biggest game of the year.
Weight lifting, nutrition, conditioning and endless practice are all well-known means of prepping to perform your best—no surprises here.
But one equally powerful means of preparing has remained lesser known—flotation therapy.
True REST in Tempe, Arizona was thrilled to host flotation sessions for players from both the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots almost every day this week!
New England Patriots players #11, WR Julian Edelman—who caught the winning touchdown that won the game, #18, SPTM Matthew Slater, #46, RB James Develin, #62, C Ryan Wendell, #77, LOT Nate Solder, and #43, SPTM Nate Ebner, among others, all enjoyed relaxing sessions—in our Float Pods throughout the week.
From the Seattle Seahawks roster we were excited to welcome #88, TE Tony Moeaki, #82, TE Luke Willson, #4, KFG Steve Hauschka—who kicked the game off and #62, G Drew Nowak, among others, to float at True REST.
We were told by head Strength and Conditioning Coach Harold Nash that up to half of New England’s players regularly float, with some—such as Julian Edelman—choosing to float each and every day.
At True REST we welcomed Edelman for multiple sessions, and were told he is one of the hardest working and most committed members of the team, and that includes his dedication to flotation therapy.
The Seahawks also shared with us their love for floating—which many of their players do several times per week.
With so much going on in the week leading up to the big game, and with float sessions booked daily, it became evident that flotation therapy was more than just an opportunity to deeply relax for these professional athletes—it was an important piece of their training agenda.
So important, in fact, that flotation tanks are already present in home training facilities. We learned that the New England Patriots will be expanding their space to include even more flotation tanks.
With teams clearing space for larger numbers of tanks—and individual players such as Tom Brady investing in their own Float Pods (the same tanks we have at True REST)—there’s more than a little something to this deeply relaxing tool.
After welcoming both teams at True REST Tempe this week, we can’t help but wonder if flotation isn’t the “secret sauce” of some of the worlds most successful sports teams.
What does flotation therapy offer these pro athletes? A wide range of benefits, including:
Injury Prevention and Recovery:
With 1,000 lbs of Epsom Salt in each Float Pod, muscles can finally fully relax. This allows the muscles to loosen and helps to drastically minimize the risk of injury when players hit the field.
Reduced Lactic Acid Production:
When lactic acid—created by the muscles during exercise—accumulates in the body cramps, tiredness, lack of concentration, and pain can occur. Flotation has been shown to reduce lactic acid in the body by flushing it out of the muscles quicker.
Muscle Tone Stimulation:
Though training stimulates muscles substantially, muscle strengthening and growth actually happens when the body is relaxed. Flotation therapy provides some of the deepest relaxation possible.
Minimized Pain:
Studies have shown that removing gravity’s impact on the body allows for quicker recovery and minimization of pain. For this reason flotation is not only a great tool for athletes, but also draws many clients who deal with the daily reality of chronic pain.
With game-changing benefits like these, it’s no wonder that the best in the game choose to utilize flotation therapy, even in what is surely the busiest week of their year.
So, who floated more this week? That we’ll keep private—but do know, we’ve got our bets placed here at True REST.
